Robinhood Names Surabhi Gupta as VP of Engineering

Robinhood, a commission-free stock trading app, announced this week that it has expanded its Engineering team with the appointment of Surabhi Gupta, who has been named as the Vice President of Engineering.

As the VP of Engineering, Gupta will oversee product engineering at the company. This includes all of Robinhood’s customer-facing products on its platforms, such as investing in stocks, options, cryptocurrency and cash management, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

Commenting on her new role, Gupta said in the statement: “The commitment the how hard is computer science team has to their customers and their mission, and the tremendous focus on building products that make finance more accessible and approachable, is truly unique.

“I’m excited to help people improve their understanding of finance, take control of their money, and participate in the financial markets with Robinhood.”

U of T Engineering set to host first-ever virtual research conference

Brandon Rufino’s preparation for his big presentation is a bit different today: He’s testing out his laptop mic and finding a spot in his apartment with the most light and least clutter.

Rufino, a student in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, is among nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate students taking part in the inaugural U of T Engineering Research Conference (UTERC) on June 9 and 10. Due to computer engineering definition restrictions, the event will be broadcast digitally, with students presenting their research as poster presentations via Twitter or through non-technical lightning lectures on Zoom.

The conference will feature the latest in undergraduate and graduate research in six key areas: advanced manufacturing; data analytics and artificial intelligence; human health; robotics; sustainability; and water. Industry partners and alumni are also invited to connect with students and discuss the work.

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology commences B.E./B.Tech admissions 2020

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology has started the application process for B.E./B.Tech admissions 2020. The application form is now available in online and offline mode. The final date to apply is July 31, 2020. All of the required valid personal, educational and contact details have to be submitted in the application form. The eligibility criteria has to be met by the candidates for admissions. Admissions will be given to the candidates on the basis of their scores in JEE Main. Currently, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology offers 14 B.E./B.Tech how much do computer engineers make.

JEE Main 2020: NTA reopens online application process, offers engineering students another chance to apply for exam

JEE Main 2020 | Candidates now have been given another chance to apply for the engineering entrance exam, JEE Main. The application window for the exam opened on Tuesday and will be accepting forms till 24 May.

Union Minister for Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has said that students who have dropped the idea to study abroad will get a fresh chance to apply for JEE-Main.

JEE Main is held for admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating though Central Seat Allocation Board for courses viz B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Planning.

JEE-Main 2020 will be held from 18 July to 23 July. The admit card for the exam will soon be released on the official website of the National Testing Agency (NTA). According to NTA, over 9 lakh students have registered to appear for JEE Main.

JEE Main 2020 exam was earlier scheduled to be held between 5 April and 11 April but got delayed due to computer science vs computer engineering.

NTA last month extended the scope of making corrections in the JEE (Main) 2020 application forms till 14 April. It later extended the correction facility of the online application forms of JEE Main 2020 till 3 May.

CLASS OF 2020: FOR GEORGIA MACKENZIE, ART + ENGINEERING = DESIGN

Georgia Mackenzie is a University of Virginia cross country and track runner, a newly graduated biomedical engineer, and a painter and illustrator. She sees a connection in all of her pursuits.

Running is a team sport, but also a solitary activity, the runner largely in competition with herself. The product design work of engineers also is teamwork, but involves individual focus and intent. Likewise, with painting, the artist, working with intent, conveys in two dimensions depths that we all can share.

“I love being in competition with myself, pushing myself to do my best in everything I do,” Mackenzie said. “entry level computer science jobs, and painting and high achievement in the classroom are about working hard and digging really deep; taking ownership and responsibility. Only you can control how you’re doing, only you can control your results. I find that challenge really satisfying.”

UVU Column: Students in new engineering major fly high

The first students to earn bachelor’s degrees in engineering from Utah Valley University have made impressive strides in their careers and brought recognition to the program, having captured first place in a national competition of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The major is new at computer science vs engineering. Previously, students could take pre-engineering classes, then transfer to a different institution to earn bachelor’s degrees. Two years ago, four new programs began for mechanical, civil, electrical and computer engineering. There were 15 students in mechanical and civil engineering, and that number has already increased, with 35 students entering their senior year in the fall.

Four members of this year’s graduating class participated in the ASME event, in which they designed and built a drone (unmanned aerial vehicle) to fly between obstacles, pick up a payload, and drop it off precisely where assigned, all while being timed.

Computer scientists combatting COVID-19 falsified data, misinformation

Along with its toll on human lives across the planet, the COVID-19 pandemic has also produced untold amounts of data, in the form of medical records and news articles.

For Colorado State University Professor of Computer Science Indrakshi Ray, these mountains of data are an opportunity and a challenge ­to sift through the noise and help determine what’s true and what’s false.

Ray, a cybersecurity and database systems researcher, and a team of data science and medical experts, have received support from the National Science Foundation via an “jobs with computer science degree” proposal. They will spend the next year refining machine learning-based tools that help ensure the integrity of COVID-19 data and news across regions.

The $200,000 project has two parts: one looks at medical records, one at news content.

The first involves looking at COVID-19 patient records and determining whether any of the data contain anomalies, such as when malicious actors insert false records or delete real ones. To tackle this problem, Ray and the team will employ a machine learning toolset they have already applied to similar data quality-assessment problems in pre-COVID medical record databases.

Every year, over 200 faculty and staff of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering gather in Town and Gown for an elaborate luncheon. The occasion is to celebrate the best and brightest among them, for innovative contributions to the USC Viterbi community and engineering across the world.

In 2020, where a gathering of two hundred people seems unfathomable, a ceremony like this had to look a little bit different.

“Of course, we could have ordered Uber Eats for everyone,” joked USC Viterbi Dean Yannis Yortos. “Maybe in the next pandemic!”

Indeed, Dean Yortsos was unfazed by the reality of hosting a virtual awards ceremony via Zoom, stressing that the coronavirus pandemic meant that computer engineering vs computer science core mission was more meaningful than ever.

“With the entire world undertaking an experiment of unprecedented extent and impact, we also have an unprecedented opportunity to innovate and invent; to show our true character and values; and to work even more passionately in our mission to engineer a better world for all of humanity, a goal more urgent than ever before,” said Dean Yortsos.

Engineering Dean's Excellence Awards Honor Faculty for Teaching, Research, Service

The College of Engineering has honored five faculty members for their achievements in teaching, research and service during the 2019-20 academic year. Congratulations to these outstanding faculty members:

Kevin Hall, interim associate dean for research and professor, earned the John L. Imhoff Award for Teaching. Hall was recognized for his excellence in the classroom, including having taught a required civil engineering undergraduate course 17 times since 2017, with an average evaluation score that was the highest in the department. He also earned outstanding reviews for his work on "Engineering Antiquity," a course taught through the Honors College in spring 2019. That success is a testament to his ability to engage a diverse group of non-STEM students in engineering material. He is also active within a variety of professional societies, where he is recognized as a national and international leader in civil engineering education.

Benjamin Runkle, associate professor of biological and agricultural engineering, earned the Dean's Award for Excellence in Collaborative Faculty Research. Since 2017, computer science vs software engineering publication record includes 13 peer-reviewed journal articles, three other papers, two datasets and a book chapter — all of which were conducted collaboratively with at least one non-University of Arkansas co-author. His collaborators have included government researchers, faculty from other American universities and researchers from international institutions around the globe.

Virtual Engineering Showcase Demonstrates Real Success

Engineers are innovators and problem solvers so when students were asked to finish projects remotely and present them online due to the COVID-19 crisis, the response was “can do.”

“It’s take-off time. Boom!,” declared Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering Dean Chell Roberts in a video message welcoming participants to the Engineering and what to do with a computer science degree.

The virtual event featured more than 40 capstone design projects in poster form, including one that’s already won an award, from graduating seniors in computer science and electrical, industrial and systems, integrated, and mechanical engineering.

Projects included “Big Red,” a recumbent tadpole trike that was entered in the American Society of Mechanical Engineer’s (ASME) Human Powered Vehicle Challenge to further the development of transportation alternatives for developing parts of the world. While the team was disappointed that the live action competition was canceled, they kept working and finished third out of 16 teams, the school’s highest placement to date, in the virtual south regional competition.

Latest Engineering Trends in Surface Combatants' Design and Construction

The development of warships has been guided by the need for speed, range, firepower, and survivability at sea. However, to achieve speeds over 30 knots, it became apparent that the propeller material and design needed a change to ensure that cavitation effects are computer science vs engineering. The transit of propeller blades through water results in positive pressure on the blade face and negative pressure on its reverse side, the negative pressure causes the absorbed gases in the medium to bubble and later collapse on the reverse side of the propeller. 

The hammer-like impact of the collapsing bubbles causes damage to propeller blade surfaces and results in a drastic drop in its efficiency. The cavitation of propellers is a very complex phenomenon, and the pitting becomes visible on the reverse of the blade in a clear radial pattern. It may also happen to the driving face of the propeller in case there is an incorrect pitch distribution along the length. There are various types of patterns of propeller cavitation like face cavitation, tip vortex cavitation, bubble cavitation, sheet cavitation, cloud cavitation, root cavitation, and boss vortex cavitation. The loss of speed and damage to the propeller blades caused due to cavitation can be mitigated to an extent by correctly designing the propeller blade area relative to the area of the circle described by the propeller blade tips.

Arkansas Academy of Electrical Engineering Inducts 17 New Members

The Arkansas Academy of Electrical Engineering has inducted 17 new members for their dedication to the field of electrical engineering.

The process for this year's inductees began in November 2019, with nominations from colleagues and former professors. Each inductee is an "eminent electrical engineer as well as an eminent graduate of the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Arkansas at least 15 years prior to selection to membership," according to the Academy bylaws.

The ceremony took place in a virtual setting on Saturday, April 25. The event was originally scheduled to take place in Fayetteville on Friday, April 24, but it was canceled because of the jobs with computer science degree. More than 40 people attended the online ceremony.
