SAP software and services aimed at offering customers

 German software firm SAP announced it’s acquiring fellow German firm Signavio, which specializes in cloud-native enterprise business process intelligence and management for an undisclosed fee. Signavio was last valued at $400 million after a $177 million funding round in July 2019.

The announcement was made in conjunction with a new product from SAP called Rise, a bundle of existing SAP software and services aimed at offering customers “business transformation-as-a-service”.SAP will aim to use Signavio’s expertise around business process intelligence to help more customers optimize these processes as they become more digital.

“I cannot overstress the importance for companies to be able to design, benchmark, improve, and transform business processes across the enterprise to support new capabilities and business models,” Luka Mucic, chief financial officer and member of SAP's Executive Board, said in a statement.Virtualization specialist Citrix announced the planned acquisition of collaboration software maker Wrike for what do computer engineers do in cash. Citrix already has a digital work platform called Workspace and will look to fold the Wrike team and technology into that product.

Now, he's received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award for $500,000 for his research in applying quantum resources to covert channels - this time focusing on sensing, rather than communication.

"The CAREER Award is very competitive, and many winners don't receive it until their second or third try," said ECE Department Head Tamal Bose. "I am proud of computer science degree jobs for winning the award on his first attempt, and excited to see the impact of his work in areas including military intelligence and organizations of civil unrest."

The growth curve is where growth companies can be found

 So, keep your eyes on the 5G wireless space. It will remain a fast-growing space. That means there is real growth potential. However, that does not mean every stock will be a winner. Remember the growth curve. It rises, crests and falls. The question you must ask yourself is this. Where on the growth curve is the company you are considering investing in, working for or being a customer of?

Is it on the rising side, is it cresting or is it falling? You want to find the companies on the growing side of the growth curve. While some companies on the falling side of the growth curve can turn around, it is less likely. One of the success stories was T-Mobile. They were literally dying several years ago. They missed the change from 2G to 3G. Then they brought in a new CEO who turned the company around. This is very difficult, but they did it.

In today’s world of 5G wireless, it’s easy to find plenty of companies on the growth side of the growth curve. Especially since some companies will struggle with the investment required to reach 5G. CES 2021 was very different this year. I expect how much does a computer engineer make will be the same. This is the first year caught in the pandemic mindset for CES and the second year for MWC. Hopefully things will be better for CES 2022 and MWC 2022. As you can see, this sector is rapidly growing and changing on its own. Coronavirus has not slowed down the advancement of 5G wireless one bit here in the United States or around the globe. However, it does have an impact on certain companies and certain ways we do things.

 Versa Secure Access enables customers to take advantage of cloud-based routing and security functionality without needing to deploy and manage an appliance in the home. Engineering challenges facing trapped ion quantum computers generally

 The ions themselves are held in place by applying voltage to an array of electrodes on a chip. “If I do that correctly, then I can create an electromagnetic field that can hold on to a trapped ion just above the surface of the chip.” By changing the voltages applied to the electrodes, Chiaverini can move the ions across the surface of the chip, allowing for multiqubit operations between separately trapped ions.

Being compounded by another technology trend

 These types of sophisticated nation-state attacks are increasingly being compounded by another technology trend, which is the opportunity to augment human capabilities with artificial intelligence (AI). One of the more chilling developments this year has been what appears to be new steps to use AI to weaponize large stolen datasets about individuals and spread targeted disinformation using text messages and encrypted messaging apps. We should all assume that, like the sophisticated attacks from Russia, this too will become a permanent part of the threat landscape.

Thankfully, there is a limited number of governments that can invest in the talent needed to attack with this level of sophistication. In our first Microsoft Digital Defense Report, released in September, we reviewed our assessment of 14 nation-state groups involved in cybersecurity attacks. Eleven of the 14 are in only three countries.

All this is changing because of a second evolving threat, namely the growing privatization of cybersecurity attacks through a new generation of private companies, akin to 21st-century mercenaries. This phenomenon has reached the point where it has acquired its own acronym – computer science engineer salary, for private sector offensive actors. Unfortunately, this is not an acronym that will make the world a better place.

Bluestaq announces scholarship fund for UCCS computer science and engineering students

 Bluestaq LLC, a Colorado Springs-based enterprise software company, launched a named scholarship in partnership with the UCCS College of Engineering and Applied Science. The Bluestaq Scholarship is open to UCCS students studying computer science or computer engineering.

The new scholarship opportunity is part of Bluestaq’s internship and workforce development program to cultivate the next generation of computer and technology professionals in the Colorado Springs space and cybersecurity ecosystem. One student will be selected from a pool of applicants, and the awardee will receive a $10,000 scholarship in addition to a guaranteed internship with Bluestaq the summer following the school year for which the scholarship was awarded.

These Neurology Residents Took a Crash Course on COVID-19

 In the setting of COVID-19, neurology residents have not only had to change the way they trained but have had to adapt and learn on the front lines of a pandemic intensive care, infection control, and respiratory interventions—at considerable risk to their own health. Here they share what they've learned and how they've managed to get through it.

Years from now, neurologists who are currently in residencies and fellowships will say, “I trained during COVID-19,” much like generations before them refer to training during the Vietnam War or the years before residency work-hour restrictions were mandated. The pandemic has, and continues, to signify a set of challenges unique to trainees who endure particularly turbulent times.

Not only did the pandemic change their mode of education, introducing virtual lectures and e-learning modules, but programs converted to telemedicine care almost overnight, in-person conferences came to an end, and interviews for fellowships and jobs were conducted by video.

Telcos need to engineer headroom into networks as traffic to remain high

 Telcos will need to engineer headroom into networks as traffic levels are expected to remain elevated amid the pandemic, driven by growing consumption of digital services like video streaming, video conferencing and gaming, a report by Nokia Deepfield said on Tuesday. Nokia Deepfield released its Network Intelligence Report which examined service provider network traffic and consumption trends in 2020.

The data is based on insights from network service providers across Europe and North America from February to September 2020 using Nokia Deepfield portfolio of solutions.

The report found that many networks experienced a year's worth of traffic growth (30-50 per cent) in just a few weeks as COVID-19 lockdown measures were implemented in March-April 2020. By September, traffic had stabilised at 20-30 per cent above pre-pandemic levels, with further seasonal growth to come.

From February to September, there was a 30 per cent increase in video subscribers, a 23 per cent increase in VPN end-points in the US, and a 40-50 per cent increase in DDoS traffic (Denial-of-service attack), it added.

"While the networks held up during the biggest demand peaks, data from September 2020 indicates that traffic levels remain elevated even as computer engineering definition are eased; meaning, service providers will need to continue to engineer headroom into the networks for future eventualities," it said.

Apple Announces First Computers with M1 Processors

 Apple has taken its first steps to move its Mac computers onto its own Arm-based processors and starting its two-year transition away from CPUs from Intel. Apple announced the MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro and Mac Mini with the new M1 chip, which can be ordered today and will ship next week.

John Ternus, VP of hardware engineering detailed the transition to the "next generation of Mac," coming over the next "couple of years."

The first chip is the M1, which Apple's chip lead computer science vs information technology said would create a "completely different class of product. It would replace the separate chips for the CPU, I/O, and more. It also includes memory on the chip.

It's a 5nm chip with 16 billion transistors. It has 8 cores, four for power and four for efficiency. Srouji said the high-performance cores are the world's fastest and deliver the best performance per watt. It has a 10W thermal envelope.

Additionally, Srouji detailed the chip's integrated graphics, an 8-core GPU  with 128 compute units. He said it's the world's fastest integrated graphics. There's also a 16-core neural engine for machine learning. It also houses the Secure Enclave for security.
