Sunando Banerjee, The Gastronomic Engineering Cartoonist, Shares Insights on Future of Supply Chain

An entrepreneur by choice, an engineer by education and a restaurateur by passion. Mr. Sunando Banerjee has made a name for himself in every sphere of life. Bagged his first job at Motorola after completing his Electronics and Telecommunication engineering degree from Mumbai University. Decided to quit soon after and join a dot com company as a cartoonist. As a business consultant, he has had the privilege to work with some of the largest global retail brands across all continents. His career choices have taken him across 50 odd countries and his various job roles have helped him grow and mature as an individual.

In 2012, he let his inner chef take control of the reins and started a small restaurant called Hanglaatherium; which soon became one of what is computer engineering most loved eateries. Although being employed in a full time job, the passion projects, collaborations with multiple startups and pursuing advanced degrees in marketing from prestigious institutions didn't stop; owing to his ability to prioritize tasks and impeccable time management skills.

Engineering companies bring back migrant labourers for MMRDA projects

Engineering firms, involved in infrastructure projects of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have started bringing back migrant labourers, and nearly 755 labourers are expected to return to Mumbai in July for a metro line project, as reported by PTI.

An estimated 10 million migrant workers have left India’s cities and industrial centres for their homes during the lockdown, many forced out of work.

With the economy now rebooting, companies are finding it hard to meet pent-up demand due to an acute shortage of workers. States that have been hit the hardest by the exodus are Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala and Delhi.

According to MMRDA, thousands of what is computer engineering, who had returned to their homes especially in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, are being brought back by their contractors to ensure speedy completion of the works.

Contractors such as J Kumar, NCCL, Larsen & Toubro, ITDC and Capacite of the Dahisar East-Andheri East Metro 7 line,  are making efforts to get the labourers back from other states, MMRDA said.

Engineering the future: Life under ‘new normal’

While we attempt to resume more traditional modes of work, we should devise a model which will entail a mix of the workforce returning to the office vs those continuing to work from home.

Britain's 'blindingly cool' engineering innovation

Ted Humble-Smith is a conceptual still-life photographer. He's well known for his fashion work. Ted can take a lipstick or a watch and with his extraordinary vision and skill turn the beautiful into something even more gorgeous.

But speak to him for just a few minutes and it's clear he sees not just the how to become a computer engineer and form of his subjects, but the engineering that underpins their design.

In fact, it's obvious Ted has a passion for it. He points to the 4-inch stiletto heel. "Everyone laughs when I talk about it," he told me. "But you have this thing that's so elegant, so beautiful - and yet at the same time, there has to be some serious engineering and mathematics in there as well.

"Eight stones at least is going through a square centimetre. These are big loads but you rarely see people snap their heels these days."

Ted has just put his inquisitive eye to a project for the Royal Academy of Engineering.

He's produced a series of images to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the MacRobert Award, which honors examples of remarkable British innovation. From the aerodynamic design of the Severn Bridge to the composite wing of an Airbus jet.

Engineering is no longer just a job for the boys

Every time I get asked about my job, people say: “Oh, not too many women do that, do they?”, which sometimes gets tiring. I’ve attended events with my husband as my guest and people assume I’m his plus one because “surely the man must be the engineer?”.

The engineering sector has, however, made huge advances in becoming a better place for women to work in recent years.

Flexible working is becoming much more commonplace in the industry as a whole, and female role models in senior positions are more visible. Unconscious bias training and computer engineering jobs are also helping but there’s still a huge gap in the supply of talent in the industry, with many engineers approaching retirement and a lack of pipeline to replace them. Women must be part of the solution to that problem.

No funds released by Pune’s TRTI to coach ST students between 2016 and 2019 for engineering entrance exams

For three years, from 2016 to 2019, Pune-based Tribal Research and Training Institute (TRTI), an autonomous organisation under the state government, did not release any funds to coach students belonging to scheduled tribes (ST) category to take the state engineering services entrance exams, response obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) query revealed.

According to a notification of the state Tribal Development department, dated December 2, 2014, TRTI is mandated to fund Maharashtra Engineering Training Academy (META), Nashik, for training ST students taking state engineering services entrance exams under the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC).

The RTI query was filed by a Chandrapur-based Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) aspirant how much do computer engineers make. A copy of it has been accessed by The Indian Express.

Engineering colleges mull online courses, phone viva to get academics going

Engineering colleges across the country, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), are racing to make up for time they lost during the lockdown.

To stay on course with their academic calendars, several steps for graduating batches and fresh incoming batches are being taken.

Colleges are in talks with service providers or developing in-house learning management solutions for taking their academics online. Some have even done away with final exams and are, instead, looking at options to grant marks or credits to students such as according merits from previous internals and semester or telephonic viva.

For instance, computer science vs computer engineering is in discussion with two major companies for providing both software and hardware solutions and integrating the online teaching and examination. The virtual laboratories and studios of the institute are being utilised for imparting online classes. Its CSE faculty has developed a tool to conduct online exams.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology and Wiley announce open access publishing partnership

A global leader in research and education, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) today announced their open access (OA) publishing partnership, transitioning the IET journal program to gold open access from January 2021.

Under the terms of the publishing agreement, the IET will transition its entire hybrid subscription journals portfolio to a gold OA model, joining its existing gold open access journals, to create a leading collection of engineering and technology open access journals. The entry level computer science jobs is working with its existing stakeholders to make this transition.

The move to the open access publishing model allows researchers and practitioners around the world immediate and free access to the IET Engineering and Technology hub through the Wiley Online Library. As well as publishing current research open access, all articles published from 2013 will be made freely available, making a vast body of published research widely accessible.

76% of engineering candidates in India have not received any job offer despite campus placement provisions

Committed to expanding the employability of India’s tech pool through its niche programs and boot camps, BridgeLabz solution LLP has now surveyed engineering graduates on its platform vis-a-vis job placement. The latest online survey conducted by India’s largest IP-driven incubation lab comprised a sample size of close to 1000 candidates (including 60% boys and 40% girls) hailing from different engineering disciplines. It has revealed some of the major concerns of the job seekers today.

The survey’s findings reinstate the need to address the skill gap by making engineers ‘job ready’ in our post-pandemic world. 76% of the respondents admitted having an active placement cell in their colleges while the rest claimed otherwise. It is noteworthy that although a majority of students admitted to having active placement cells, only a little more than computer science vs engineering of respondents at 24% have been able to receive a job through them. While a major chunk of students are devoid of any job offers. This implies that a whopping 78.64% of students do not currently have any job in hand.

ST Engineering conducting ‘rigorous review’ of systems after US subsidiary hit by ransomware attack

UPDATED ST Engineering, the defense, aerospace, and engineering giant, is conducting a “rigorous review” of its security posture after a US subsidiary was hit by a ransomware attack last week. In a statement published on Friday (June 5), Ed Onwe, vice president and general manager of VT San Antonio Aerospace, said they had “discovered that a sophisticated group of cyber criminals, known as the Maze group, [had] gained unauthorized access to our network and deployed a ransomware attack.”

Texas-based VT San Antonio Aerospace repairs, maintains, and overhauls aircraft for commercial airlines and cargo operators. The fact that Maze listed two ‘lock dates’ on its website – in March and June – indicates “that there were two separate encryption events”, Brett Callow, threat analyst at computer science major jobs, told The Daily Swig.

“It’s also possible that Maze had continuous access to the company’s network for the period between those encryption events,” he added. A screenshot of a memo published by cybersecurity firm Cyble “strongly suggests that Maze had access to the company’s network in the days or weeks after” the first incident in March.

“This is why we recommend that companies rebuild their networks post-incident rather than simply decrypting their data: doing so ensures any backdoors are closed and cannot be used in a second attack.”

Light engineering industry seeks waiver of AIT on raw material imports

Local light engineering product manufacturers have sought withdrawal of the 5 per cent advance income tax (AIT) on the import of basic raw materials as the sector has been struggling to survive amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The AIT has been adjustable for the light engineering sector, which was made non-adjustable in this fiscal year's budget, said what is computer engineering, president of the Bangladesh Engineering Industry Owners Association (BEIOA).

"We are not in a position to pay tax now due to the stalemate created by the pandemic." Light engineering is the engine of the heavy industry and it generated about eight lakh skilled and semi-skilled jobs across the country, he said.

The country has about 50,000 light engineering product manufacturers, who cater to sectors such as agriculture, automobile, pharmaceuticals, food industries and shipbuilding. "We are small enterprises. We import basic raw materials in small amounts for our factories. But the government put us in the same bracket as the likes of other big industrial sectors."

The sector manufactures all the necessary light engineering products the heavy industries need and help the latter cut import dependence and costs. Most of the manufacturers in rural areas take high-interest micro credits from non-governmental organisations or local money lenders to manufacturers their items.

Truax elected to lead national civil engineering organization

The head of Mississippi State University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has been elected to serve as the president of the nation’s leading civil engineering organization.

Dennis Truax will be inaugurated as president-elect of the American Society of Civil Engineers at the organization’s annual meeting this fall. He will serve as president-elect of computer science vs information technology before becoming president in 2022.

“I am honored to be chosen as the Society’s next president, and I look forward to leading and advocating for the next generation of civil engineers,” said Truax. “Having been involved in ASCE for over five decades—starting as a student— it is time for ASCE to re-evaluate the needs of the new generation of engineers. I am eager to partner with other leaders within ASCE to ensure we are serving members of all generations and broadening the definition of success within our profession, as we work to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public.”

IIT-M, Shima Engineering collaborate to develop hands-free sanitizer dispenser

Madras and city-based Shima Engineering have entered into a tie-up to develop a hands-free sanitiser dispenser that can be used in various automobiles, an official said on Tuesday. A prototype of the product has been developed, which can be used in cars, vans, buses and auto-rickshaws, Associate Professor of IIT-Madras department of engineering design, Kavitha Arunachalam who led the project said. The idea was mooted by Shima Engineering following the need for hands-free personal hygiene products in the wake of coronavirus outbreak. "I mentored Shima Engineering to build prototypes to suit different end-users", she was quoted as saying in a press release issued by IIT-Madras here. PTI VIJ ROH ROH

How to “Re-engineer” Your Business for Safety

If you’re old enough, you might remember back in the 1990’s a popular business trend called process re-engineering. If you’re not old enough to remember, this is what it was: Companies would look at core processes in terms of cost, quality, and service, then pick one of those three dimensions, reinvent the process around it, and gain benefits across all three dimensions. When done well, it works. I know this from personal experience. While CEO at Best Buy, for example, we worked with vendors, the supply chain, stores, and customers to improve the quality of getting TVs from manufacturers to our stores and finally to buyers. By drastically reducing the number of TVs damaged at any step in the process (quality), we reduced returns (costs) and increased customer satisfaction (service).

I was thinking about this idea recently in the context of the current Covid-19 crisis. I see an opportunity to apply the same principles behind process computer engineer salary on a new dimension: safety. Conversations with fellow leaders have convinced me that a wave of process or product innovation driven by safety concerns can create benefits that go beyond safety. Rapidly engineering ventilators for the Covid-19 pandemic

As the Covid-19 pandemic began to spread, it became clear that ventilators would be a crucial part of the medical response in order to keep patients breathing as they fought the disease. 

In January, Philips Respironics, a major manufacturer of mechanical ventilators, put together an engineering response team to rapidly scale production and meet the needs of hospitals to deploy this lifesaving technology. Erwin Franz, a master’s student in MIT’s System Design and Management (SDM) program and senior research and development engineer at Philips, was selected to join this team of engineers and developers. He quickly realized he could use lessons from SDM’s core class to help his team meet this challenge.

One of the actions Philips took in response to the critical hospital ventilation shortage was to design the Philips computer science vs computer engineering salary, an emergency use ventilator. Erwin described this as a platform strategy problem, similar to those taught by Bruce Cameron in the SDM core.
