As science gains ground, fewer students opting for MBA, engineering

An engineering degree followed by an MBA is often been seen as the most successful career trajectory in India. This belief might be losing ground, shows an HT analysis of a National Statistical Office (NSO) report on education which was released in July. In fact, general courses such as humanities, sciences and commerce are now becoming more popular, a trend experts attribute to a growing gap between the skills professional degrees impart and what is needed in the job market.

The NSO released the findings of its difference between computer engineering and computer science survey on Social Consumption of Education in India last month. A comparison with a similar report from 2014 shows that management and engineering courses have seen the biggest proportionate fall in their share of students. For management, this has almost halved, while engineering has suffered a 22% decline. Science courses have registered the biggest increase during this period. Overall, general courses have seen a 6.3 percentage point increase between 2014 and 2017-18, while the share of students going to professional courses has declined by the same amount.

STEM education report highlights barriers to engineering careers

EngineeringUK has today (23 July) launched a new report which explores the trends in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education participation and attainment leading into engineering careers.

The Engineering UK 2020 Educational Pathways into Engineering Report, written in March 2020, indicates that progress has been made – more young people are studying the GCSE and A level subjects that lead into engineering, while technical education reforms are also enabling students to be more prepared for the world of work.

However, young people’s knowledge of engineering across all education stages still needs to be improved with just 42% of boys and 31% of girls saying they know what they need to do next to become an engineer.

The findings show there is also an acute shortage of STEM subject teachers in both secondary and further education. Almost three quarters of further education college principals rank engineering as the most difficult subject in which to recruit sufficiently qualified teaching staff.

The report also highlights the increased urgency of creating more opportunities for underrepresented groups in engineering, including those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds whose challenges are likely to be accentuated by school computer science vs information technology. There is also a need to address inequities for young people from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, with black pupils 2.5 times more likely to be misallocated to a lower set in maths than white pupils.

IBM Posts Gains as Customers Accelerate Shift to Cloud

International Business Machines (IBM) beat estimates for second-quarter profit on Monday and signalled that demand in its cloud computing business would get a boost as large corporations accelerate their digital shift due to the coronavirus crisis.

The company's shares rose 5 percent in after-hours trading.

IBM has jettisoned some of its legacy business to focus on the high-margin cloud computing business, an area that has seen a lot of action in recent years as companies ramp up their digital shift to boost efficiency.

"The trend we see in the market is clear. Clients want to modernise apps, move more workloads to the cloud and automate IT tasks," IBM's new boss Arvind Krishna said on a post-earnings call with analysts.

Revenue from the cloud business, previously headed by Krishna, rose 30 percent to $6.3 billion (roughly Rs. 47,000 crores) in the second quarter.

Krishna took over as chief executive officer from computer engineering salary, while appointing former Bank of America Corp's top technology executive, Howard Boville, as the new head of the cloud business.

LEHVOSS North America Partners with Forward Engineering North America

Collaboration leverages additive manufacturing to accelerate development of automotive structural thermoplastic products and provides 3D printing expertise.

The collaboration between the two companies aims to fill the “knowledge gap” in Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) in support of the automotive industry by providing guidance in translating performance characteristics between additive manufacturing (AM) parts and injection molded parts.

Robot-related services powered by cloud computing to soar - research

Robot-related services powered by cloud computing will reach US$157.8 billion in annual revenue by 2030, according to new figures released by ABI Research.

The analyst firm says despite being only in its nascent stages, the value of cloud infrastructure to robots is key for both deployment (encompassing development, configuration, and instalment) and operation (maintenance, analytics, and control).

With the popularisation of mobile robotics in a wide range of verticals, it will become necessary to what jobs can you get with a computer science degree the computing power of cloud infrastructure to store and manage the vast troves of collected data as well as to train more advanced algorithms used to power robot cognition, it says.

"Since 1961, most commercial robots have been wired or tied to external infrastructure for movement. "Several cloud service providers, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, have begun collaborating with robotics developers, while start-ups like InOrbit target cloud-enabled operations for the first major deployment of mobile service robots."

Three Bay County schools are accepted into Amazon computer science program

As schools prepare to reopen in the fall,  three bay county schools are also planning to add a new computer science program to their curriculum.

It is called the ‘Amazon Future Engineer Program’ and these schools are some of the few to have it around the country. Tech wizards at Deane Bozeman, Bay and Rutherford High Schools are getting excited for this new computer science program.

“It’s teaching computer fundamentals so students can leave high school and get higher paying jobs or head into college with a background in the stem field under their belt,” said Ivan Beach, principal at Deane Bozeman.

The Amazon Future Engineers program in partnership with entry level computer science jobs will sponsor a more in depth program for students to learn coding and programming. “There’s been limited schools nationwide but we’re excited because we know anything they touch generally turns out to be amazing,” said Beach.

This will be the first program of its kind here at Bozeman High School. The principal says they have computer science classes but none at the advanced level.

“So far the students we were able to be in contact with are really excited about this,” said Beach. “Especially the ones who are thinking about gaming or programming or computer science or computer engineering as a career.” Over at Rutherford High School they already have a day schedule for computer science classes. Principal Coy Pilson says he hopes the appeal of this program will get more students interested in joining the classes.

Uber plans to shift engineering jobs to India to cut costs

US-based ride-hailing firm Uber is planning to cut costs by shifting engineering jobs to India, a report in The Information website has said.

The news comes a few days after the company laid off more than 600 employees in the country as the coronavirus pandemic hit the business. During his first visit to India in 2018, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the company's plans to boost its engineering presence, which has been reiterated on several occasions by the company.

The sudden departure of Uber’s chief technology officer Thuan Pham, who resisted Khosrowshahi’s push to move jobs to India, has revived the CEO’s efforts, the report said, citing two employees of the firm.

Pham, who left in May, had on an earlier occasion told computer science vs software engineering that if he wanted to go ahead with the plan, he could have to do to so with a different CTO, the report said. According to the report, Pham said hiring more engineers in India would mean accepting lower-quality candidates.

Uber didn't immediately respond to Moneycontrol’s email seeking its comments.

In 2018, Uber's tech team grew by 150 percent and the plan was to double it 2019, Apurva Dalal, head of engineering, Uber India, had said. The company, at that time, was believed to have more than 500 engineers in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Engineering colleges mull online courses, phone viva to get academics going

Engineering colleges across the country, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), are racing to make up for time they lost during the lockdown.

To stay on course with their academic calendars, several steps for graduating batches and fresh incoming batches are being taken.

Colleges are in talks with service providers or developing in-house learning management solutions for taking their academics online. Some have even done away with final exams and are, instead, looking at options to grant marks or credits to students such as according merits from previous internals and semester or telephonic viva.

Engineering a Better World: A Year of Uncertainty and Ingenuity

Every year, over 200 faculty and staff of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering gather in Town and Gown for an elaborate luncheon. The occasion is to celebrate the best and brightest among them, for innovative contributions to the USC Viterbi community and engineering across the world.

In 2020, where a gathering of two hundred people seems unfathomable, a ceremony like this had to look a little bit different.

“Of course, we could have ordered Uber Eats for everyone,” joked USC Viterbi Dean Yannis Yortos. “Maybe in the next pandemic!”

Indeed, Dean Yortsos was unfazed by the reality of hosting a virtual awards ceremony via Zoom, stressing that the coronavirus pandemic meant that computer engineering vs computer science core mission was more meaningful than ever.

“With the entire world undertaking an experiment of unprecedented extent and impact, we also have an unprecedented opportunity to innovate and invent; to show our true character and values; and to work even more passionately in our mission to engineer a better world for all of humanity, a goal more urgent than ever before,” said Dean Yortsos.

Engineering Dean's Excellence Awards Honor Faculty for Teaching, Research, Service

The College of Engineering has honored five faculty members for their achievements in teaching, research and service during the 2019-20 academic year. Congratulations to these outstanding faculty members:

Kevin Hall, interim associate dean for research and professor, earned the John L. Imhoff Award for Teaching. Hall was recognized for his excellence in the classroom, including having taught a required civil engineering undergraduate course 17 times since 2017, with an average evaluation score that was the highest in the department. He also earned outstanding reviews for his work on "Engineering Antiquity," a course taught through the Honors College in spring 2019. That success is a testament to his ability to engage a diverse group of non-STEM students in engineering material. He is also active within a variety of professional societies, where he is recognized as a national and international leader in civil engineering education.

Benjamin Runkle, associate professor of biological and agricultural engineering, earned the Dean's Award for Excellence in Collaborative Faculty Research. Since 2017, computer science vs software engineering publication record includes 13 peer-reviewed journal articles, three other papers, two datasets and a book chapter — all of which were conducted collaboratively with at least one non-University of Arkansas co-author. His collaborators have included government researchers, faculty from other American universities and researchers from international institutions around the globe.

Arkansas Academy of Electrical Engineering Inducts 17 New Members

The Arkansas Academy of Electrical Engineering has inducted 17 new members for their dedication to the field of electrical engineering.

The process for this year's inductees began in November 2019, with nominations from colleagues and former professors. Each inductee is an "eminent electrical engineer as well as an eminent graduate of the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Arkansas at least 15 years prior to selection to membership," according to the Academy bylaws.

The ceremony took place in a virtual setting on Saturday, April 25. The event was originally scheduled to take place in Fayetteville on Friday, April 24, but it was canceled because of the jobs with computer science degree. More than 40 people attended the online ceremony.

From the Desk: Engineering and Technology dean shares how COVID-19 challenges are being met

The engineering and technology profession has a distinguished and proud history of responding to crises through innovation and creativity under multiple constraints, including time.

A classic example is the challenges NASA faced to bring the crew of Apollo 13 home alive after an explosion that resulted in the loss of oxygen due to a major system failure, putting the astronauts' lives in jeopardy unless a solution was designed and deployed very quickly.

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented analogous challenges for health care workers as they strive to treat patients. One critical area faced by Indiana University Health and other health care systems was contingency planning to provide enough ventilators to patients who might need them. Thanks to the outstanding relationship between the School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI and IU Health, our faculty were ready to respond when IU Health reached out for assistance with creative solutions.

IU Health requested an initial design and fabrication of components by the School of Engineering and Technology that would be able to serve 100 patients with 50 ventilators, along with the capability to provide more components proportional to demand as part of surge planning.

Paul Yearling, a clinical assistant professor of mechanical engineering technology, along with other faculty members from the Department of Engineering Technology, reverse-engineered, redesigned and fabricated ventilator parts and other critical electrical and mechanical components required to split a ventilator's function to serve two patients if necessary.

An engineering solution to achieve the same functionality with half of the originally designed capability, in this case ventilators, was reminiscent in many ways to the creativity required with Apollo 13 to provide oxygen for the astronauts after the major system failure.

In addition, given Yearling's well-established relationship with IU Health, he was also able to rapidly start up and lead the production to 3D-print much-needed personal protective equipment, or PPE, as a backup for IU Health.

And the School of Engineering and Technology's contributions do not end there.

Professor of electrical and computer engineering Stanley Chien, using facilities provided by the Transportation and Autonomous Systems Institute at IUPUI along with facilities provided by IUPUI's energy, mechanical and computer science vs software engineering engineering programs, fabricated intubation boxes to protect health care clinicians from virus-laden aerosols often resulting from intubation procedures. Such a just-in-time fabrication was particularly helpful for some rural and regional hospitals in the Midwest that did not have adequate personal protective equipment.

In addition, four teams led by faculty in mechanical and energy engineering worked diligently to complete innovative ventilator designs and created rapid prototypes ready for testing. An ambu-bag-style ventilator was created by Jaime Arcos, a former visiting scholar at IUPUI, in close collaboration with associate professor Andres Tovar.

On Engineering in Crisis: Finding Your Rhythm

One of the most important ways I reduce stress right now is through music. I am in a small jam band that has been meeting for over ten years, along with a women’s chorus, and it is fun for me to figure out how we can still meet virtually! I am retired, but I have many volunteer commitments and I am grateful for the opportunity to take a breather from the daily hustle bustle as gatherings get canceled. I also exercise every day to try to avoid the creeping computer science vs software engineering 19, analogous to the Freshman 15, and to keep my heart healthy.

There are so many great blogs and posts out there with hacks for working from home during a crisis, that I can’t offer anything unique other than to say try to set a schedule or rhythm that your head can resonate with and that supports the work or school schedule for any online classes or calls. I know most schools are using asynchronous distance learning, which simplifies many things but doesn’t offer much hand holding for navigating how to use, so that takes some time to get used to.

Zoom is a great tool for maintaining community. We recently had our first virtual SWENext meetup in the San Diego area on Zoom and spent an hour talking about getting ready to return from spring break to a distance learning (DL) environment. Two of the participants were collegians already using DL and two of the girls had started DL the day before.

UMass Amherst Electrical and Computer Engineers Help Baystate Health Upgrade Control Cables and Power Systems for Ventilators

Engineers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst responded to a request for help in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic from Baystate Health in Springfield by designing new, longer control cables for ventilators and the elimination of battery power sources. The design changes, developed by a team of electrical and computer engineers, allow medical personnel to control the ventilators at a distance and without using personal protection equipment (PPE), and they provide a more reliable source of power.

The UMass Amherst team is made up of Christopher V. Hollot, professor and department head at the department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE); Baird Soules, a senior lecturer and Shira Epstein, a lecturer, both at ECE. Other contributing members are ECE alumnus Tom Kopec; Jeremy Paradie, an undergraduate; Scott Glorioso, president of The Battery Eliminator Store and son of former UMass ECE professor Robert Glorioso; and Chris Denney, CTO at Worthington Assembly in South Deerfield, Mass.

Hollot says these two projects really were a team effort. “This engineering response spanned the greater UMass family including alumni, undergraduate, the computer science engineering community, local industry and faculty.”

Baystate Health’s resident physician Mat Goebel initially contacted the electrical and computer engineering department (ECE) to fabricate a 25-foot control cable for their ventilators. The existing cable length is less than 10 feet. The engineers determined that longer cables did not exist and that the original shorter cables are extremely backordered. They also found that a key part of the design, the connectors, is proprietary.
