How can the cybersecurity community defend against this type of attack?

 This is a scenario, because the intrusions were so well done, when it’s hard to come up with a list of easy fixes. Because these are sophisticated adversaries, they compromised a system, SolarWinds, that was incredibly widely used and widely trusted. They essentially exploited that trust to carry out their operations, and that is something that’s really hard to defend against. This is not the same thing as just fixing a single software vulnerability and applying a patch—it’s a lot more difficult to combat this kind of threat.

This sheds some light on just how fierce the competition is between nations in cyberspace. We spend a lot of time talking about things like deterrence, norms and signaling between nations. But my view is that this kind of activity—competition, espionage, well below the threshold of conflict, what I call shaping the international environment to suit one’s ends—that’s par for the course in computer science average salary. So, while this is certainly a high-water mark, the daily competition that leads to events like this is par for the course. And I think we probably need to spend more time in the policy world thinking about the implications of that. It’s pretty clear right now [that] the status quo, both in policy and in technology, does not let us deter this activity, and does not let us technically block this activity.

Collaboration with its partners and developed as part of a National Science Foundation

 Created by Rowan’s Experiential Engineering Education Department (ExEEd) in collaboration with its partners and developed as part of a National Science Foundation grant, the game is much better at predicting a person’s real-world responses than traditional electronic surveys, according to new research published in the Australasian Journal of Engineering Education. 

That means students who play the virtual simulation over a 15-day period also better learn how to prevent accidents from occurring due to poor decision-making, explained Associate Professor Cheryl Bodnar, whose engineering education research is backed by the National Science Foundation and the Kern Family Foundation.

Cybersecurity hiring more than doubles in last three quarters

 In the last three quarters of 2020, cybersecurity hiring has more than doubled in the Aerospace, Defense, and Security (ADS) market, according to the Jobs Analytics database by leading data and analytics company, GlobalData.

It has grown to a high of 4,800 active jobs in October 2020 compared to 1,800 as of January 2020.

Although the total hiring was relatively flat during first quarter of 2020, job postings in themes such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing stood out.

GlobalData Business Fundamentals analyst Ajay Thalluri said: “Companies are exploring and looking to plug vulnerabilities while building deterrence. During the last few months, companies such as Raytheon, Thales, computer engineer salary, General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin have posted senior-level cybersecurity positions. These include Director – Cyber Strategy and Risk; Associate Director – Cybersecurity Architecture; Director – Incident Management; Chief Information Security Officer; Chief Cyber Security Engineer/Architect; Director Data Governance.”

MicroWorld Collaborates With Indian Computer Emergency Response Team For Cyber Security

 MicroWorld Technologies Private Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India for collaboration in the area of cyber security.

Through this MoU, CERT-In and MicroWorld Tech Private Limited propose to work together to enhance the overall security of the computing environment in India and to address the increasingly complex problems associated with cyber security threats.

The MoU would facilitate cooperation for the detection of the latest cyber security threats such as malware/botnets that can adversely affect the information assets and privacy of the general users in the country and devise appropriate security measures while providing security tools to enable such users to secure their systems.

AN OPEN SOURCE ETHERNET SWITCH IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND

But the days of wired networking are far from over, and there’s still plenty of hardware out there that can benefit from being plugged in. But putting an Ethernet network into your project requires a switch, and that means yet another piece of hardware that needs to get crammed into the build.

Seeing the need for a small and lightweight Ethernet switch, BotBlox has developed the SwitchBlox. This 45 mm square board has everything you need to build a five device wired network, and nothing you don’t. Gone are the bulky RJ45 jacks and rows of blinkenlights, they won’t do you any good on the inside of a robot’s chassis. But that’s not to say it’s a bare bones experience, either. The diminutive switch features automatic crossover, support for input voltages from 7 V all the way up to 40 V, and management functions accessible over SPI.

Cybersecurity expert designs free online course on cyber safety

Cybersecurity expert Ananth Prabhu G has designed a free online cyber safety course “I am Cyber Safe” that was formally launched by IGP D Roopa, Home secretary, sandalwood actor Sudeep and Ananth Prabhu on Saturday. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, there has been a massive rise in cybercrimes in the country and the launch of the cyber safety course coincides with the cybersecurity awareness month being observed.

Ananth Prabhu, professor, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management told TOI, the objective of the course is to help citizens browse the internet responsibly, spread awareness on various cyber crimes and preventive measures to be adopted and to introduce people to the cyber laws. This is a free online course and Rohan Don Salins, research assistant has designed and developed the website.

The entire course is in simple English and intends to reach out to the people in rural areas. The programme comprises 30 modules in seven parts that include an introduction, 30 cybercrimes, five-minute video by Ananth Prabhu, infotoons in the animated format from the e-booklet ‘Cyber Safe Girl v3.0 Beti Bachao Cyber Crime Se’. These videos have been created by Cyber Jagruti Foundation. The course also includes relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, IT Act, what does a computer engineer do and other relevant acts. It also has additional YouTube Videos. Preventive measures and remedies have been included.

OIA issues decision to restructure telecom and information technology

Oman Investment Authority (OIA) has announced the restructuring of companies operating in telecommunication and information technology sector, and dissolution of the boards of some companies and reduction of the number of board members in other companies.

The decision includes Oman Broadband Company, computer science vs information technology, Satellite Communications Technology Company and Oman Towers Company.

OIA said in a statement, "The decision aims to develop the performance of the companies, raising their efficiency and enabling them to be effective players in the state economy."

"The Authority decided to reduce the number of boards of directors of subsidiaries of the group, as well as reduce the number of members of their boards of directors and unify the support services for companies to increase their effectiveness and reduce operating expenses," OIA added in the statement.

The Jammu and Kashmir Mechanical engineering Graduates Association (MEGA) on Thursday appealed the government of union territory (J&K) to redress the pending issues of engineering community in general and mechanical in particular.

In a statement MEGA said, “It is unfortunate that the mechanical being old important wing of engineering has been always being ignored as far as the expansion, cadre review and issue redressal is concerned.” It further added that mechanical engineers are always in high demand in every department or sector in UT of J&K.
