ST Engineering conducting ‘rigorous review’ of systems after US subsidiary hit by ransomware attack

UPDATED ST Engineering, the defense, aerospace, and engineering giant, is conducting a “rigorous review” of its security posture after a US subsidiary was hit by a ransomware attack last week. In a statement published on Friday (June 5), Ed Onwe, vice president and general manager of VT San Antonio Aerospace, said they had “discovered that a sophisticated group of cyber criminals, known as the Maze group, [had] gained unauthorized access to our network and deployed a ransomware attack.”

Texas-based VT San Antonio Aerospace repairs, maintains, and overhauls aircraft for commercial airlines and cargo operators. The fact that Maze listed two ‘lock dates’ on its website – in March and June – indicates “that there were two separate encryption events”, Brett Callow, threat analyst at computer science major jobs, told The Daily Swig.

“It’s also possible that Maze had continuous access to the company’s network for the period between those encryption events,” he added. A screenshot of a memo published by cybersecurity firm Cyble “strongly suggests that Maze had access to the company’s network in the days or weeks after” the first incident in March.

“This is why we recommend that companies rebuild their networks post-incident rather than simply decrypting their data: doing so ensures any backdoors are closed and cannot be used in a second attack.”

Light engineering industry seeks waiver of AIT on raw material imports

Local light engineering product manufacturers have sought withdrawal of the 5 per cent advance income tax (AIT) on the import of basic raw materials as the sector has been struggling to survive amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The AIT has been adjustable for the light engineering sector, which was made non-adjustable in this fiscal year's budget, said what is computer engineering, president of the Bangladesh Engineering Industry Owners Association (BEIOA).

"We are not in a position to pay tax now due to the stalemate created by the pandemic." Light engineering is the engine of the heavy industry and it generated about eight lakh skilled and semi-skilled jobs across the country, he said.

The country has about 50,000 light engineering product manufacturers, who cater to sectors such as agriculture, automobile, pharmaceuticals, food industries and shipbuilding. "We are small enterprises. We import basic raw materials in small amounts for our factories. But the government put us in the same bracket as the likes of other big industrial sectors."

The sector manufactures all the necessary light engineering products the heavy industries need and help the latter cut import dependence and costs. Most of the manufacturers in rural areas take high-interest micro credits from non-governmental organisations or local money lenders to manufacturers their items.

Truax elected to lead national civil engineering organization

The head of Mississippi State University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has been elected to serve as the president of the nation’s leading civil engineering organization.

Dennis Truax will be inaugurated as president-elect of the American Society of Civil Engineers at the organization’s annual meeting this fall. He will serve as president-elect of computer science vs information technology before becoming president in 2022.

“I am honored to be chosen as the Society’s next president, and I look forward to leading and advocating for the next generation of civil engineers,” said Truax. “Having been involved in ASCE for over five decades—starting as a student— it is time for ASCE to re-evaluate the needs of the new generation of engineers. I am eager to partner with other leaders within ASCE to ensure we are serving members of all generations and broadening the definition of success within our profession, as we work to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public.”

IIT-M, Shima Engineering collaborate to develop hands-free sanitizer dispenser

Madras and city-based Shima Engineering have entered into a tie-up to develop a hands-free sanitiser dispenser that can be used in various automobiles, an official said on Tuesday. A prototype of the product has been developed, which can be used in cars, vans, buses and auto-rickshaws, Associate Professor of IIT-Madras department of engineering design, Kavitha Arunachalam who led the project said. The idea was mooted by Shima Engineering following the need for hands-free personal hygiene products in the wake of coronavirus outbreak. How to “Re-engineer” Your Business for Safety

If you’re old enough, you might remember back in the 1990’s a popular business trend called process re-engineering. If you’re not old enough to remember, this is what it was: Companies would look at core processes in terms of cost, quality, and service, then pick one of those three dimensions, reinvent the process around it, and gain benefits across all three dimensions. When done well, it works. I know this from personal experience. While CEO at Best Buy, for example, we worked with vendors, the supply chain, stores, and customers to improve the quality of getting TVs from manufacturers to our stores and finally to buyers. By drastically reducing the number of TVs damaged at any step in the process (quality), we reduced returns (costs) and increased customer satisfaction (service).

I was thinking about this idea recently in the context of the current Covid-19 crisis. I see an opportunity to apply the same principles behind process computer engineer salary on a new dimension: safety. Conversations with fellow leaders have convinced me that a wave of process or product innovation driven by safety concerns can create benefits that go beyond safety. Importantly, it can help uncover and unleash the kind of growth and efficiency opportunities that will essential to offset what is likely to be a challenging environment for many companies.

Rapidly engineering ventilators for the Covid-19 pandemic

As the Covid-19 pandemic began to spread, it became clear that ventilators would be a crucial part of the medical response in order to keep patients breathing as they fought the disease. 

In January, Philips Respironics, a major manufacturer of mechanical ventilators, put together an engineering response team to rapidly scale production and meet the needs of hospitals to deploy this lifesaving technology. Erwin Franz, a master’s student in MIT’s System Design and Management (SDM) program and senior research and development engineer at Philips, was selected to join this team of engineers and developers. He quickly realized he could use lessons from SDM’s core class to help his team meet this challenge.

One of the actions Philips took in response to the critical hospital ventilation shortage was to design the Philips computer science vs computer engineering salary, an emergency use ventilator. Erwin described this as a platform strategy problem, similar to those taught by Bruce Cameron in the SDM core.
